Critics have proclaimed Wells as "the Father of modern science fiction".

Upon its publication, The Time Machine was hailed as a masterpiece. The novels appeal lies in its attempt to fathom what would become of the human race in the distant future.

The novel tells the story of 'the Time Traveller' an unnamed Victorian scientist who travels into the future, to the year 802701. There he meets two new races of people: the playful, child-like Eloi, who spend there days in leisure and the Morlocks, a subterranean group that are the actual produces of resources and the superior species that prey on the Eloi. The future he sees has frozen in the same stage of evolution and has no desire to grow or change.
